Lambs!

We've had our hair sheep for just over a year. Something went wrong with the breeding because they should have lambed around June but are actually just lambing for the first time RIGHT NOW! Vet wasn't sure what the cause was but the lambs seem to be healthy, so I guess that's all that matters. We generally try to lamb/calve when it's warmer and grass is plentiful. Not right before a blizzard...

We've had 8 lambs so far out of 4 ewes, with one ewe to go. One ewe had triplets but rejected one of them. We bottle fed him for a few days and found him a new home with a friend of ours. He was as cute as can be but bottle feeding just wasn't in the cards for us right now.

Now that they have babies, they are extra flighty.

It was hard to get a shot with all of the lambs in the same shot, that was reasonably close up. You can see most of them in this one. Such an array of colors!

I think they would have been fine without it but because of the poor timing for the lambs and the blizzard, I made them a little shelter. It's an old awning cover and a couple beat-up, wire cattle panels.

Stay tuned for pictures of our new cattle pasture and the fun that has ensued so far...

Hey Jon, Sorry I wasn't there to help with lambing. I will return on the 27th - if you need an extra set of hands.

No worries. There really wasn't anything to help with. We let the cows calve and the ewes lamb. We only step-in if there are problems, which isn't very often.
